Retro Bowl: the front office and the field, both in your hands
Retro Bowl came out of New Star Games in early 2020 and looks like a 16-bit football game from 1992, but the design is modern. Half of it is management: a 32-team league with a 17-game schedule, a salary cap, a three-round rookie draft you have to scout, free agents, trades, and a roster of up to ten key players whose morale rises and falls with playing time and results. The other half is the plays. You never control the defense; you control the quarterback, the ball carrier and the kicker, and a season comes down to whether you can hit a receiver in stride on third and long.
The build on retrobowl.lol is the HTML5 version, served from this domain, so it loads in the page without an app store or an install. It runs on a school Chromebook and on a phone with touch controls, and it saves your career in the browser, so the same laptop picks up where you left off. Pick a bad team on purpose: the fans start with low expectations, and turning a two-win franchise into a Retro Bowl winner is the whole game.
Controls & mechanics
| Action | Control | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Pass | Click and drag away from the target receiver, release to throw | The longer and straighter the drag, the harder the throw; a short drag floats it over the linebacker |
| Bullet or lob | Right-click while aiming | Switches between a low bullet and a high pass; lob over a defender sitting in the lane |
| Scramble | Drag backwards and release | The quarterback tucks and runs; drag forwards while he runs to dive for the extra yard |
| Hand off | Click the blue circle at the snap | Gives the ball to the running back; W and S side-step, drag back to slow down |
| Kick | Click once for power, once for direction | Field goals, extra points and punts all use the same two-click meter |
Building a winner
- Spend your first credits on a quarterback: Every pass goes through him, and a 4-star QB with high accuracy turns half-open receivers into completions. Offensive line and a kicker come next; a running back can wait.
- Scout before you draft: Draft prospects show their potential only after you scout them, and scouting slots are limited. Spend them on the first-round pool, then take the best unscouted athlete in round three and coach him up.
- Watch morale, not just stars: A star with low morale drops passes and refuses a new contract. Give him snaps, win games and upgrade the stadium; cutting a healthy non-toxic player hurts everyone else's mood.
- Use the sideline: Throwing towards the boundary keeps the safety out of the play. On a scramble, run to the sideline and dive: a short gain beats a sack in the middle of the field.
Key features
- Full franchise mode: Salary cap, contracts, a three-round scouted draft, free agents, trades for future picks, coordinators and three facility upgrades — everything that shapes a roster.
- Every pass is yours: No play-calling menu: you aim and throw each ball, choose bullet or lob, scramble with the quarterback and time both clicks of every kick.
- Saves in the browser: The HTML5 build keeps your career on this device, so a season started at lunch continues after last period.

Pro tip: When the offense stalls and you need a first down, drag towards the running back's flat route rather than the deep man: a short completion with a swipe up or down after the catch beats a contested throw, and a completed pass keeps the drive clock alive.
